Even in a city as small as York, being a tourist can be a tiring business. Rather than spending all day on your feet you can hop on the city sightseeing bus and take a tour of York’s most famous sights. There are twenty stops in all (see the map below) many of which are right next to some of the city’s most popular attractions.

The route is a roughly circular tour of that skirts around the walls before heading out towards the racecourse. Beginning outside the Art Gallery, you head towards Monkbar following the line of the city walls – and enjoying views of the Minster as you go. As the bus cuts back through the city centre there are further stops for The Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Centre and Clifford’s Tower.

The full loop of the tour takes around an hour, however your ticket entitles you to unlimited travel within a 24 hour period. You can hop on or off the bus at any stop you like, allowing you to explore York at your own pace.

If you do want to stay on for the full tour, the onboard audio commentary provides you with a potted history of the city and its sights.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating. During the warmer months sitting on the open top deck is a very pleasant experience, however, make sure you wrap up warm during the winter.

Buses are quite regular and you should only have to wait between ten and – at most – thirty minutes, and the service runs from 9am till 5.30pm.
