The newest of the four Travelodge hotels in York, York Central Layerthorpe is a large multistorey building on the outskirts of town. Located on the east side of the city just beyond the walls, it’s in a great location for price conscious tourists – being in easy reach of York’s attractions and bars.
Hotel Facilities & Location
Whereas some of York’s other Travelodge hotels are in noiser parts of the city that can get a bit lively of an evening, their Layerthorpe hotel is in a more residential area – albeit with a few unsightly industrial units nearby. Despite this, it’s only a couple of minutes walk to York Minster and the city centre proper.
Travelodge claim on their website that this hotel is great for those going to the races. It might be a great priced option but being at least two miles from the racecourse means you’ll probably again be reliant on taxis to ferry you about. It is also on the opposite side to the train station and whilst it is technically walkable it would probably be worth saving your feet and getting a taxi.
It also has some facilities that some of the other Travelodges lack. There is free but limited onsite parking – which is a bit of a hidden cost at some hotels when you travel to York by car and there is also an in house bar and cafe where you can get a hot breakfast and evening meal – it’s not just vending machines and a breakfast box.
Inside things are what you’d expect if you’ve stayed in a Travelodge before – albeit with a slightly fresher feel to things given its newness. You get the surprisingly comfortable double bed, basic but functional ensuite and some rudimentary tea and coffee making facilities.
Aside from the standard double rooms you can book a family room – suitable for a family of four or three adults – and an accessible double if you have mobility issues. Prices are obviously cheaper the further away you book and there are different rates depending on whether you add breakfast or cancellation options.
