With a massive 101 rooms, Hotel Indigo York is perhaps not your typical small-scale boutique hotel. However when it comes to style they’ve certainly got all the bases covered – with plenty of nods to the city’s confectionary making history. Pannelled walls look like huge blocks of chocolate, there are lights made from antique jelly moulds (or clever replicas) and plenty of photos of York as it was way back then.

Hotel Facilities & Location

Usually in most hotels there is a considerable jump in quality been the regular rooms and the most expensive, however at Hotel Indigo York there are high design standards throughout with some nice luxury touches as standard – like the rainfall showers. The more expensive options have larger beds and extra complimentary features – which in the Superior Premium room means Sky TV and your own Nespresso machine (but not George Clooney).

This is very much a hotel for leisure rather than business – and this is confirmed by the complete absence of any business facilities like meeting or conference rooms. If you are looking for somewhere to stay for a romantic weekend in York or want to go shopping with the girls (and sample a few spritzers) then Hotel Indigo York is definitely one to get on your shortlist.

The onsite restaurant 88 Walmgate looks as plush as the rest of the hotel, however has never seemed all that busy when YORK:PM have walked past. It was previously known as The Yorkshire Meatball Company – if memory serves – however, it has subsequently been relaunched perhaps due to some unfavourable Tripadvisor reviews.

Location-wise the city centre is only a short walk away – as are most things in York – but the railway station is probably worth a taxi ride, especially with heavy suitcases. Historically Walmgate has been one of the city’s “poorer” quarters. However in recent years there has been an explosion in local eateries – perhaps due to the lower rents – and you can enjoy many a good meal without going more than 400 yards.

There isn’t any parking available at the hotel itself, however there is a council run car park within a couple of hundred yards on Peel Street.
