Originally two buildings – a warehouse and a corn exchange – The Grand Opera House was converted into a theatre around the turn of the 20th century. Now a listed building, it plays host to touring productions of plays, musicals, opera and ballet, as well as one-off performances by comedians and other theatrical and musical events.
Although it tends to have more “popular” shows than York Theatre Royal – TV comedians, ABBA Tributes and the like – the Opera House does from time to time host more “serious” theatre with big name actors from the West End.
