Dining out can be an expensive business. A couple of courses, a bottle of wine, some coffees to finish and you might have to get the credit card out. If you like getting a good deal on your grub we’ve put together a guide to some of the best cheap places to eat in York. Most of these offers run throughout the year, but its always worth double checking if you’re in York on a race day or in the run up to Christmas.
Without a doubt Monday is the best day for deals on food in York. The two Slug & Lettuces both offer a massive 50% off your food bill and this has been matched by Kennedy’s on Swinegate and Revolution on the river next to City Screen.
The food in all three is quite similar in style. Burgers, steaks, American-inspired pulled pork, with the odd superfood salad thrown into the mix – upmarket comfort food. On any other day of the week the food is not really too expensive – half the price and the meals are an absolute bargain.
Two of the bars mentioned above also have deals on other days too. At Kennedy’s, it’s half price chicken wings on Tuesday, 2-4-1 on burgers on a Wednesday and on Thursdays from 5pm you can get two steaks and a bottle of wine for £29.95. At the Slug & Lettuce you can get any burger and a drink for £7 on a Monday and Tuesday or 3 of their small plates (like tapas) for £12 or 5 for £18 all day, every day.
Tuesday is “Tapas Tuesday” at All Bar One. You can get 4 of their small plates and a bottle of wine for £20. If you like a burger then Lendal Cellars have a pretty good deal running. If you order any burger off their menu you get a drink for £1. The cheapest is £7.79 – complete with fries and coleslaw – and the most expensive, a Wagyu burger, is £12.49.
Hidden away off of Grape Lane, 1331 – a pleasant bar and restaurant – offers a set menu all day 7 days a week. Two courses are £14.95 and three are £17.95 – and most of the set menu options are taken from the main restaurant menu. A York institution – and favourite with locals and tourists alike – French eatery Rustique also has a set menu deal that runs throughout the week (note that it’s only available till 7pm on a Friday and Saturday night). Two courses are £14.95 and three are £17.95.
If French food is your thing you could also try Côtes Brasserie on Low Petergate. Their lunch and early evening menu runs from 12 till 7pm Monday to Friday and costs £10.95 for two courses or £12.95 for three. The options are a bit more limited than at Rustique however and if you want steak there is a £2 supplement.
The Go Down – opposite York Dungeon – has a set menu which is available every day (although you’ll have to order before 6.15pm on a Saturday and vacate your table by 7.30pm). They have a decent range of meat and fish options and a choice between five classic desserts. One course is £14.50, two is £16.50 and the full three is £19.50.
One of the cheaper set menus in York, The Biltmore (pictured at top of page) offers two courses for £10.50 or three for £12.50. The deal is available Tuesday 5 till 7pm and Wednesday to Friday 12 till 7pm. Choices are a little limited however, with only three starter, three main and three dessert options. All Bar One also have their own set menu deal. I think, although it’s not entirely clear from their menu, that two courses are just a tenner and you can add a third for an extra £3, which seems a bit of a bargain if I do say so. However some of the menu options have a supplemental charge – so if you want Steak Frites, for example, it’ll cost an extra fiver.
The Yak and Yeti – a Nepalese restaurant on Goodramgate – offers 10% off your bill between 5 and 7pm. Almost opposite, Bombay Spice – a decent little Indian restaurant – have a meal deal between 5.30 and 7pm. One course is £9.95, two £12.95, whilst the full three courses is £14.95 (your main course comes with any choice of rice or naan, which is excellent).
At the little Italian restaurant Il Paradiso Del Cibo on Walmgate you can get a main course and a drink for £9.25 between 6 and 7.30pm. 29 States – another good Indian restaurant opposite Clifford’s Tower – also has an earlybird offer running between 5pm and 7pm.

Cheap Pub Grub
If you’re not too fussy Wetherspoons is one of the cheapest places to eat in York. Yes, they use the microwave quite a bit in the kitchen, but the food is not bad at all – and often comes with a free drink to wash it down. You’ll also find some very reasonably priced pub food in The Lowther, The Hole In The Wall and The Windmill Inn (at the top end of Micklegate).
