Saving money on your stay doesn’t mean you always have to settle for less. Here are some cheap hotels in York where you can get a great nights sleep without breaking the bank.

Ibis York

77 The Mount, York YO24 1BN

National Railway Museum – 15 minute walk, York Minster – 18 minute walk

If you’re visiting for the races and are looking for cheap hotels in York the Ibis is in a very handy location. It’s a short walk from the station on the south side of the city and then it’s another 15 minutes walk to the racecourse.

Rooms are what you’d expect from a hotel chain like Ibis – comfortable and functional. Breakfast is all you can eat and the hotel bar is open till late (and they have a pool table!). They have their own car park to the rear as well, although it’s a little small given the size of the hotel.

Cheap York Hotel, Travelodge Layerthorpe

Travelodge York Central Layerthorpe

Layerthorpe, York YO31 7RE

The Shambles – 12 minute walk, York Dungeon – 14 minute walk

The newest of the city’s Travelodge hotels, York Central Layerthorpe is close enough to the centre that everything is walkable – but far enough away that you won’t be disturbed by marauding hen parties.

Inside things are what you’d expect if you’ve stayed in a Travelodge before – albeit with a slightly fresher feel to things given its newness. Aside from the standard double rooms you can book a family room – suitable for a family of four or three adults – and an accessible double if you have mobility issues. Prices are obviously cheaper the further away you book and there are different rates depending on whether you add breakfast or cancellation options.

Premier Inn York Blossom Street North

20 Blossom Street, York YO24 1AJ

National Railway Museum – 10 minute walk, York Minster – 15 minute walk

Just outside the city walls but only a stones throw from the railway station, Premier Inn Blossom Street North offers a great location at very affordable prices. On the right side of York for the racecourse the hotel is also a great option if you’re in town to lose some money on the horses.

Unlike its sister hotel Blossom Street South, this Premier Inn has limited parking available – although it’s charged at over £10 per day. There are two rates for rooms with the cheapest being the saver rate – however, once booked you can’t get a refund or change the dates.

Fishergate, York YO10 4FD

Cliffords Tower – 5 minute walk, Merchant Adventurers Hall – 7 minute walk

Despite being located close to the city centre, the York Novotel is tucked away in a quiet corner next to the River Foss. The main attractions are within easy reach – Clifford’s Tower and the Castle Museum are literally round the corner.

Parking is available but costs £11 per day. There is a pool too, but with it being a large hotel with many guests it can get quite busy – so if you want a relaxing swim you’ll have to pick your moment. The York Novotel is not always that cheap – but they often have good deals on advance bookings so it’s well worth looking at.

Travelodge York Central

90 Piccadilly, York YO1 9NX

York Castle Museum – 6 minute walk, Clifford’s Tower – 5 minute walk

If you’re looking for a budget hotel in York city centre then Travelodge York Central is definitely worth checking out. Just around the corner from York Castle Museum, Clifford’s Tower and the Dungeon, Parliament Street – the main shopping street – is just a short stroll along Picadilly.

Whilst its location is excellent, just be aware that the hotel is above a large Wetherspoons. If you need to get an early night’s sleep on a Friday or Saturday night this might not be the hotel for you. However the pub is handy if you want a Full English in the morning as the hotel only offers the Travelodge breakfast boxes.

If you want to stay in the heart of the York then you can expect room prices to be a bit more expensive. However, both the Travelodge and Premier Inn chains have city centre hotels and there are always bargains to be had if you’re flexible about when you visit – or are booking months in advance. Check out our guide to city centre hotels in York for the best places to book.

Holiday Inn

Tadcaster Road, York YO24 1QF

The Shambles – 30 minute walk, National Railway Museum – 30 minute walk

The Holiday Inn is a cheerful and cheap York hotel. Although in an excellent location for the racecourse, it’s a little bit out of town. The distance is walkable but you’ll be better off catching one of the many buses that run along Tadcaster Road (a taxi will cost you £7/£8).

The hotel offers free parking which is nice as this is one of the hidden extras you usually end up having to pay for. If you don’t fancy the hotel restaurant the Fox & Roman and the Cross Keys nearby both serve some decent grub. There is also a Holiday Inn Express York which is located out near Stockton on the Forest – so make sure you book the right one!

The Waggon & Horses

19 Lawrence St, York YO10 3BP

York Minster – 15 minute walk, York Castle Museum – 10 minute walk

If you’re looking for cheap hotels in York you might want to consider staying somewhere like The Waggon & Horses. More a pub with rooms than a typical hotel, The Waggon and Horses offers homely accommodation at very reasonable prices.

A short walk from town, it’s in a very handy location if you’re coming to York for an event at the Barbican – which is just round the corner. The pub itself is a really nice place to drink and they usually have a fine selection of ales on tap. It’s not a rowdy boozer so doesn’t disturb the rooms upstairs. There is a small car park to the rear which is free to use for guests.

The Rose & Crown

13 Lawrence St, York YO10 3BP

Jorvik Viking Centre – 14 minute walk, Cliffords Tower – 12 minute walk

Another pub with rooms – and cheap place to stay in York – The Rose & Crown is a couple of doors down from The Waggon & Horses. The rooms are clean and modern and the pub is friendly and laid back. Walmgate bar can be seen through the pub windows and the city centre is less than 10 minutes walk away.

The hop on / hop off sightseeing bus stops nearby (very handy for over-weary legs). You can eat here too – the Rose & Crown has a rightly deserved reputation for serving excellent food. Parking to the rear is free and WiFi is available – although the speed isn’t great.

Travelodge York Hull Road

Hull Road, York YO10 3LF

York Dungeon – 33 minute walk, York Chocolate Story – 34 minute walk

Although a good half an hour’s walk from the city centre, the Travelodge on Hull Road is an option if you’re looking for cheap rooms in York. This is one of those stock Travelodges you often find at service stations – so not very glamorous from the outside. However, it’s clean, comfortable and priced competitively.

The location isn’t too bad. It is technically walkable from the centre of York, and given its proximity to the university there are also plenty of buses to take you into town. It’s also right next to The Black Bull where you can get a few pints or some decent pub grub after a hard day’s sightseeing.

Mercure Fairfield Manor

Shipton Road, York YO30 1XW

York Minster – 55 minute walk, Bootham Bar – 55 minute walk

Clean, comfortable hotel in its own grounds to the north of the city. The countryside views offer a relaxing change from the hustle and bustle of York during peak tourist season. The hotel is very much on the outskirts of town (which is why rooms tend to be cheaper and the parking is free).

You can obviously drive into the city centre but the parking isn’t cheap. Alternatively you can travel into York by bus – there is a stop outside the hotel – or use the Park and Ride at Rawcliffe Bar. The hotel bar is a little on the expensive side – which is unfortunate as there aren’t really any other drinking options nearby.

Budget hotels York, Premier Inn

Premier Inn York North

Clifton Park Avenue, Shipton Road YO30 5PA

York Minster – 32 minute walk, York Art Gallery – 28 minute walk

Another cheap York hotel that is a little way from the city centre, Premier Inn York North is set back off Shipton Road behind The Doormouse pub. This quiet location is well away from the hustle and bustle of Parliament Street and Micklegate.

The free parking at the hotel is a nice bonus – something most other hotels charge in excess of £10 a day for. If you don’t want to drive into York, buses run past regularly – ferrying people to and from the Park and Ride at Rawcliffe Bar – and a taxi will set you back £6 to £8. The hotel itself has the typical Premier Inn feel; you get the comfy king-size bed, blackout curtains and choice of hard and soft pillows.

When it comes to cheap places to stay in York you can’t get cheaper than the city’s youth hostels. Obviously you’ll have to share a room, however the facilities are all very modern and up market and the prices can’t be beaten. Read more in our guide to York’s youth hostels here.

York Pavilion

45 Main Street, Fulford YO10 4PJ

Cliffords Tower – 30 minute walk, York Dungeon – 31 minute walk

A listed building in the Fulford area of York, the York Pavilion Hotel has plenty of character and charm. A popular wedding venue, the hotel staff take care to maintain other guest’s peace and quiet.

Despite being on the opposite side of the river to the Knavesmire, the hotel is often a popular choice for racegoers – the walk across Millenium Bridge is pleasant if a little long. It is also quite close to the Designer Outlet which is less than a mile away. Town itself is a 30 minute stroll along the river, a £7 taxi ride or a short bus journey. The parking is free.

Heworth Court Hotel

76-78 Heworth Green, York YO31 7TQ

York Minster – 15 minute walk, York Dungeon – 20 minute walk

A friendly independently-run hotel within 15 minutes walk of the centre of York. A great value-for-money option for those on a budget, the rooms are clean and simple but have a homely feel to them (unlike the bigger chain hotels).

Breakfast is excellent – whether you’re after a full English or something more continental in style – there is a restaurant and bar on site and the car parking is free – but can be a bit of a squeeze. Although the journey into town is short there is a bus stop outside the hotel if you don’t fancy the walk.

Cheap Hotels Near York

Premier Inn York South West

Bilbrough Top, Colton YO23 3PP

If you’re coming to York to visit friends or go to a family wedding and don’t need to be right in the centre of the city then there are some good deals on rooms in cheap hotels near York. Out on the A64 as you head toward Leeds you’ll find the Premier Inn York South West.

You get the standard Premier Inn features – including their good night guarantee – and there is a restaurant on site where you can get both a hot evening meal and breakfast. If you have a designated driver – or are happy to pay for a slightly more expensive taxi – then this Premier Inn is potentially an option for visitors to York races.

Travelodge York Tadcaster

A64 Eastbound, Bilbrough LS24 8EQ

Like the Premier Inn above, Travelodge York Tadcaster is on the right side of the York for the racecourse. Given its somewhat out of the way location it is also one of the cheapest of York’s hotels as well. Just be aware that given its dual carriageway location you have to be on the right side of the road to access the hotel.

Premier Inn York North West

White Rose Close, York Business Park YO26 6RL

Although technically in York, Premier Inn York North West is right out at the city’s outer limits. Not the most exciting of locations, there is a Beefeater on site and a couple of other places to eat nearby. You can travel into York proper via the buses that go from the closest Park and Ride or you can drive in and leave your car in one of the many city centre car parks.
