If you’re looking for car hire York has plenty of options – most of which are in easy reach of the railway station. Due perhaps to the large number of firms rental prices are quite competitive. You can hire a Fiat 500 for a 24 hour period for a cost of around £25 – included taxes and insurance.
Car Hire in York
Most of the hire firms have understandably clustered around the station area. Europcar – who also trade under the Keddy brand name – can be found next to the long stay car park (head right when you exit via the station’s main entrance).
The Enterprise office is actually inside the train station itself – next to platform . The Alamo and National brands also use this branch of Enterprise and I wouldn’t be surprised if they shared the same fleet of cars (f you’re going to hire through one of these brands you might as well just pick the cheapest). There is also another Enterprise depot on Foss Island Road on the eastern side of the city and one at Monk’s Cross.
Hertz is about a five minute walk back along Leeman round (adjacent to the station). Avis can be found on Layerthorpe Road near the large Sainsbury’s supermarket. It’s walkable from the station but will take you about twenty minutes (maybe more if you’re pulling a heavy suitcase).
Car-wise if you’re looking for a small engined motor to keep costs down, Keddy have Fiat 500s and Enterprise have some nippy Toyota Aygos. If you’re after something greener, then Hertz have the all-electric Nissan Leaf (don’t worry there are charging points around York).
If you need to more 6 or 7 people about – or just need the extra space – you can pick up a Vauxhall Zafira or Seat Alhambra from Alamo / National / Enterprise and the slightly curious Toyota Avanza from Keddy. At the more luxury – or premium – end of the market, National have both C and E class Mercs whilst Keddy have the Audi A6 and BMW 520.

Minibus Hire in York
Minster Self Drive (on Micklegate just round the corner from the station) offers car, van and minibus hire – handy if you’re coming to York for a stag weekend and need to travel to a location outside of the city. You can get a “Luxury Van” (a small minibus in other words) from the Alamo / National / Enterprise conglomerate but it only has nine seats.
