Don’t want to stay in a standard chain hotel? Fancy somewhere with some character and individual style? Try a York boutique hotel for a more memorable experience.

Hotel Indigo

88-89 Walmgate, York YO1 9TL

York Minster – 9 minute walk, Merchant Adventurers Hall – 3 minute walk

Although perhaps a little larger than your average York boutique hotel, Indigo certainly has the style. The individually designed bedrooms seek to capture York’s chocolate making heritage and distinctive stonework – and these themes are continued throughout.

The in-house restaurant doesn’t have the greatest reviews but the Walmgate/Fossgate area has a fantastic selection of eateries. Although on the opposite side of the city to the train station, once you’ve arrived everything in York is within easy walking distance.

Judges Court Hotel

Coney Street, York YO1 9ND

York Minster – 5 minute walk, The Shambles – 3 minute walk

Hidden away in its own courtyard just off of Coney Street – the city’s main parade of high street shops – Judges Court is the most centrally located of all the boutique hotels in York.

It has more going for it than just location however. A four storey grade II listed townhouse – originally used as lodgings for judges in the city on legal business – this beautifully presented hotel combines Georgian architecture with elements of contemporary design (just take a look at the pictures!).

Hotel du Vin

89 The Mount, York YO24 1AX

Cliffords Tower – 12 minute walk, York Dungeon – 11 minute walk

A converted Grade II listed townhouse, Hotel du Vin offers guests a luxurious stay in York with handsprung mattresses, Egyptian cotton linen and roll top baths. Bigger than it looks from the street, the hotel has 44 bedrooms some of which are housed in a newer extension toward the rear.

If you don’t fancy heading back into town, the bistro restaurant is excellent and serves classic French dishes. A short walk from the station (roughly 10 minutes), Hotel du Vin is on the same side of the city as The Knavesmire and the walk to the racecourse is around twenty minutes.

Marmadukes Town House Hotel

4-5 St. Peter’s Grove, York YO30 6AQ

The Shambles – 12 minute walk, York Dungeon – 14 minute walk

A short stroll from the walls, Marmadukes Town House Hotel is a located in a more residential area away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. With a homely feel and classic style this York boutique hotel, a one-time residence of a Victorian gentleman, certainly doesn’t feel like your typical chain.

The restaurant, which offers among other things an eight course tasting menu, has an excellent reputation among locals – it didn’t get its three AA rosettes by accident!

The Churchill Hotel

65 Bootham, York YO30 7DQ

York Minster – 6 minute walk, Merchant Adventurers Hall – 11 minute walk

A Grade II listed mansion a short stroll from the city centre, The Churchill Hotel combines English architectural heritage with contemporary design. There are nods to the hotel’s namesake throughout and the sweeping central staircase and chandelier give the main lobby more than a touch of grandeur.

They offer a range of different accommodation option including four poster rooms and a Prince of Wales suite. Parking is available on site but will be extra on your bill.
